August 7, 2011

On August 6th 2011, Blue Mountain Park in Coquitlam, BC, was bustling with the sounds and smells of Korea for the 10th annual Korean Heritage Day Festival. This one day event showcased traditional Korean heritage through a variety of cultural performances, food, and a gathering of the Korean- Canadian society.

Even though this story happened some time ago, I believe it still inspires and shows how the whole community can work together to make a difference. The story really represents the philosophy behind Strathcona Business Improvement Association. It captures the creation of Zero Waste Challenge and Resource Park project and how the association uses commercial waste as a community resource. I hope you will enjoy it, and hopefully - get inspired.

You will not want to miss this one! Join us at Green Wednesdays on Dec. 3rd to watch the newly released award-winning documentary "Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story" (75 min).  Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer are filmmakers turned subjects when they wanted to show just how much food we waste. Just Eat It has premiered across Canada, the USA and Europe. Visit http://www.foodwastemovie.com to learn more. We are thrilled that Jen and Grant will be coming to this event as our guest speakers!

“In my lifetime, I have been called many names.” Can you think beyond the labels?

A public service announcement by the Stage Door Theatre Troupe, celebrating the UN's International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, 2013. Scripted and performed by actors who have personal experience with the subject matter, the troupe’s goal is to join a global movement that is breaking down barriers by actualizing the rights of persons with disabilities.

Gecko Makes It Easy How to reduce your impact, strengthen your community, and enhance your lifestyle. The range of new products available that have a deduced environmental impact continually impresses me. Ever the optimist, I take this as a sign that a real shift is happening in the way humans understand the connections between modern society and the natural systems we intersect. Yet, I do get a bit frustrated that sustainable products are often hard to find in my everyday shopping.
